This thing is fully loaded. Really. I got it with an after market Intel 80GB SSD and swapped out one of the dual 340GB 7200 Seagates. Very responsive, high powered and the screen is great.
For the money, nothing comes close, plus that 2 year global warranty. There is a lot of bloatware pre-installed, but this seems to be very typical. I’m still tidying some of it up but I’m very happy already with where it is. I would buy this again with absolutely no regrets.

I have always loved ASUS motherboards and used them exclusively in the past when building systems.
When I was looking for a laptop and found this offering from Asus, it was a no-brainer both from a price perspective and my fondness for the Asus brand.
This laptop has exceeded my expectations.
It is loaded to the hilt and the build quality is phenomenal.
Asus also offers a free 2 year “anything goes” warranty, provided you return the registration card prompty. Also, make multiple copies of your receipt and registration card since they require the original receipt be submitted, then ask that you also mail them a copy.
It is on the large end of the spectrum, so keep that in mind if you intend to transport it frequently.
If, however, you are looking for a primarily home-based machine that incorporates the latest technology, is speedy, and works very well, this is it.

Love ASUS .. have never had a problem with any of their products. The N71JQ-A1 is replacing a M71 that’s about 2 years old. The N71 has a good quad processor, good storage capacity, good video card and the blu-ray drive. Comes with 2-320gb drives – not sure why ASUS partitions the 2nd drive into 2. The boot drive, okay, I understand partially. There is one partition that holds all the recovery files. But they divided up the remaining into 2 portions – I would have liked the boot drive to have had 1 partition for the recovery files and then the rest as another partition, and the 2nd drive a full 320gb. But, not a big issue. I did upgrade the memory to 8gb. And I got a new Dell U2410 monitor to go with the unit – so I get full HD at 1900×1200. With the blu-ray drive you get a really nice picture. Totally recommend this laptop!

I bought this offline, but also read amazon reviews before deciding. Somewhat regret Not getting it from amazon, as there is more selection here.
I am happy with my N71J…But I think I would have been happy with the 15″ or 16″ ASUS version also, which is about $500-$600 less. My retailer only had this one in stock though with the Intel i7 processor.
The Pros:
- awesome screen quality and sound quality.
- very quick in opening programs and saving data.
- Win 7 is great, but if you are upgrading from XP like I am…get set for a learning curve. I still cant figure out alot of functions and it’ll be a while till I am fully literate.
The cons:
- I personally hate the “chiclet style” embedded keyboard, found it very hard to use. I fumbled with it for 2 days, before plugging in an external keyboard. Also with the price tag of this computer…I am worried about spilling something on it..so I think using an expternal keyboard and mouse is safer.
- It’s huge…and a bit heavy, twice as heavy as average 5lb laptop..9lbs without the powerbar…and the powerbar is a brick…which adds another 3lbs easy!. I’m going to be using it at home 90% of the time, so its not that big a deal. But if I had to be on the road with it daily, I would find it cumbersome. Ladies…this big laptop also didnt fit into my fashionable, cool laptop bag, which is made for 15- 16″ laptops. I’m going to have to buy a “real” laptop bag that fits a 17″ or 18″ computer. It also takes up quite a bit of room on my desk.
- Windows 7 is NOT compatible with alot of software and hardware. I even checked the Microsoft Win 7 compatibility page before buying my laptop…and its wrong! Now I have to say goodbye to my trusty old inkjet printer which worked fine, just cause it doesnt have a Win 7 driver. Plus re-buy expensive software like Photoshop, etc.
- built in video camera – is ok, but you need to have alot of lights on in the room or the picture is grainy.
- manufacturer doesnt make a docking station for this. ..This is not really a product defect, but I sure wish there was a docking station or port for the ASUS laptops, so I wouldnt have to re-plug in all my peripherals every time I move this thing.
Overall a good machine and you wont regret having it..but it’s HUGE!.. like I said…I would have bought the 15 or 16 in if it was available when I needed it. I would say the lower grade models will suit the needs for 90% of users unless you really want it to run DVDs or high powered gaming and such.

ASUS is certainly a serious competitor in the laptop market especially if it continues to make machines that are as solid and feature rich as this one. I’ve owned and tried laptops at home and while travelling from all other manufacturers, and have been satisfied with 2 years of use before things started to go wrong. This ASUS is built for much tougher use, and was cutting-edge when I bought it, with the i7, Windows 7 and the USB 3.0, so I suspect it will last 4 – 5 years easily.
My only negative observation after 8 weeks of use is that the Blu-ray software causes conflicts with my anti-spyware program (PC Tools Spyware Doctor). To view a Blu-ray without freezes and skipping you have to disable this anti-spyware program. I tried working on a solution but have given up, content to either settle for DVD (which plays with no problems) or to disable the anti-spyware from PC Tools temporarily while I watch a Blu-ray.
I also bought the Western Digital My Book 3.0 – 1 TB USB 3.0 external drive, and its ease of use and speed on the ASUS USB 3.0 port is blazing. It seems as fast as any internal HD, transferring backups and large files in a blink. The speed of USB 3.0 is very impressive, and its inclusion on the ASUS laptop was a major reason I chose ASUS and this model laptop.
I am very, very happy with the quality and performance of this laptop, and recommend anyone investigate ASUS for their needs vs. the more commercially available competitors.
